The Land, known as the "Spackle" or "Spacks" to humans, are the native humanoids of New World. Although they share one collective voice, individuality is retained among them. The Noise can be communicated by their leader, the Sky.

Description[]

Books[]

Todd Hewitt states in book one that Spackle look like human males, except that their mouths are higher, their ears are different, and that they are longer and weirder than men. He also states that their clothing is similar to moss or lichens. This was mentioned to be based on Ben's previous observations of the Spackle.

Later, in book one, Todd, Manchee, and Viola find a Spackle. Todd describes it as having white skin, a tall and thin build, long fingers and arms, a mouth in the middle of the face, ear flaps down near the jaw, having onyx-black eyes, and wearing lichen and moss on the body like clothing. When Todd assaults the same Spackle, he finds that they have red blood.

In The Ask and the Answer, when the Spackle are encroaching onto Haven at the ending of the novel, the Spackle are seen with white and green skin, hinting there is possible genetic diversity within the species.

Film[]

The Spackle are portrayed as having twisted faces, black skin, black clothing, four claws on each hand and foot in the film. They also have normal Noise (opalescent) and black Noise, and are also shown having opalescent blood.

Culture[]

The huts of Spackle villages are dome-shaped and made out of pieces of wood. Todd describes them in book one as "melting blobs of tan-colored ice cream except hut-sized."

The Spackle are also shown to be resourceful, as they use parts of nature for their survival.

Language[]

The language of The Land is highly unknown. What is known is through the perspectives of humans and 1017 in the books.

The Land primarily communicate with Noise. Without Noise, the Spackle communicate with each other through clicking sounds (according to humans). The only written phrase known is "es'Paqili" ("The People"), which was in the beginning of The Knife of Never Letting Go.

Armory[]

The armor of the Land is made out of clay. They ride battlemores as mounts and their weapons include bows-and-arrows, lethal catapults, Noise, and acid rifles.

The Pathways[]

The Pathways are messengers of the Land. They consult with the Sky on what to say to the rest of the Land.

Bivouacs[]

Bivouacs are the plausible villages of the Land.

Creches[]

Creches are a part of the Land's culture.

Terminology[]

The terminology of the Spackle all relates to nature and simplicity.

History[]

Pre-Series[]

The Land have evolved with the Noise germ and they use it to communicate with each other. When humans arrived, the "Spackle" were nearly wiped out due to the belief that they infected all men with the Noise. A group of Land were later enslaved by humans and forced to work for humans in order to survive.

Chaos Walking[]

The Knife of Never Letting Go[]

Todd Hewitt and Manchee find silence in the Noise in the swamp near Prentisstown and decide to investigate a nearby Spackle village to find the source. They find nothing, although the cause of the silence is later revealed to be Viola Eade.

Late, Todd comes across a Spackle and kills it to avenge his parents and prove himself as a man who can kill.

The Ask and the Answer[]

Spackle appear in the novel as The Burden. The Burden are Spackle imprisoned by humans and forced to work for them. Later, The Burden were killed (except for 1017) by David Prentiss, Sr. at the abandoned monastery with a bomb.

Monsters of Men[]

The Land go to war with the humans in Monsters of Men after 1017's escape in The Ask and the Answer by Todd Hewitt. The Sky initially leads them, but 1017 later becomes the new Sky after the old Sky's death.

Chaos Walking (2021)[]

Todd Hewitt warns Viola Eade of nearby Spackle by showing her opalescent smoke in the sky that is not human Noise far from the their location. Todd mentions that the Spackle are aliens; Viola refutes him, claiming that the humans are the real aliens on New World as they have invaded the Spackle's homeworld. Later, Todd and Viola encounter a Spackle village on the water via an overlooking cliff when Manchee begins barking at it. As they (Todd, Viola, and Manchee) run, a male Spackle emerges from a nearby river, sensing Todd's Noise. Viola and Todd hide and Viola urges Todd to quiet his Noise when the Spackle grabs Todd and supposedly drags him in the direction of the Spackle village. Todd stabs the Spackle and begins to fight it while Manchee barks at it. In anger over his parents' deaths, Todd tackles the Spackle into a nearby river and nearly kills it when Viola desperately cries for him to stop. Todd stops stabbing and the Spackle peacefully walks into the forest, albeit now afraid of Todd. Todd admits that the Spackle killed his parents and begins to feel worthless for sparing a Spackle's life.

  • When Todd assaults a Spackle in book one, he finds that it has red blood. This suggests that the Land has a form of hemoglobin in their blood similar to human hemoglobin.
